Christ's Foretold Death

Scripture Prophesy + Fulfillment in Christ

Psalm 22, Isaiah 52:13-15, and Isaiah 53 each foretell that the Christ, or Messiah will be a suffering servant and how he will die for His people.

The Christ would :    be Despised       Suffer    be Betrayed        be Forsaken    be Silent       be Beaten     be Crucified                Die for the Sin of the World        More        be Alive Again!

Christ will be despised by men:   But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people.  Psalm 22:6

This is what the Lord says - Redeemer and Holy One of Israel - to him who was despised and abhorred by the nation, to the servant of rulers:  "Kings will see you and rise up, princes will see and bow down, because the Lord who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you."  Isaiah 49:7

He grew up before him like a tender shot, and like a root out of dry ground.  He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.  He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.  Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.  Isaiah 53:2,3

But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, 'We don't want this man to be our king.'  Luke 19:14

With one voice they cried out, "Away with this man!  Release Barabbas to us!"  Luke 23:18

He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.  John 1:11

Christ would sufferJust as there were many who were appalled at him - his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness...  Isaiah 52:14

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.  Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.  Isaiah 53:3

And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer."  Luke 22:15

And being anguished, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.  Luke 22:44

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet was without sin.  Hebrews 4:15

Christ would be betrayed by a friend:  Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.  Psalm 41:9

If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it;  if a foe were raising himself against me, I could hide from him.  But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend, with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship as we walked with the throng at the house of God.  Psalm 55:12-14

Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve.  And Judas went to the chief priest and officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.  Luke 22:3,4

"Yet there are some of you who do not believe."  For Jesus had know from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.... Then Jesus replied, "Have I not chosen you, the Twelve?  Yet one of you is a devil!" (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)  John 6:64,70 (and Matthew 20-25, Mark 14:1720)

Christ would be Forsaken"Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me!"  declares the Lord Almighty."  Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little ones."   Zechariah 13:7

Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'"  Matthew 26:31

But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone.  Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me."   John 16:32

Christ would be Silent before His Accusers:  He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was like a lamb to the slaughter, and a s a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.  Isaiah 53:7

When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.  Matthew 27:12

He plied him with  many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.  Luke 23:9

Christ would be beaten and spit upon:  Just as there were many who ere appalled at him - his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness.... Isaiah 53:14

The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears, and I have not been rebellious; I have not drawn back.  I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard;  I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting.  Isaiah 50:5,6

Marshal your troops, O city of troops, for a siege is laid against us.  They will strike Israel's ruler on the cheek with a rod.  Micah 5:1

Then he released Barabbas to them.  But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.... Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.  Others slapped him...Matthew 27:26, 67

They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.  Matthew 27:30

Christ would be Crucified: Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and feet.  Psalm 22:16

"As you now, the Passover is two days away - and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified."  Matthew 26:2

"Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up..." John 3:14

Christ would Die for the Sin of the World:  But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;  the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.  We all, like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.  He was oppressed and afflicted yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before the shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.  By oppression and judgment he was taken away.  And who can speak of his descendants?  For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken....  Yet it was the Lord's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand....Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with  the transgressors.  For he bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors.  Isaiah 53:5-8,10,12

After sixty-two 'sevens', the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing.  The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary.  The end will come like a flood:   War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed." Daniel 9:26

And when Jesus had cried out again in  a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from the top to bottom.  Matthew 27:50,51 (and Mark 15:37-39; Luke 23:44-48)

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father...     Galatians 1:3,4

When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats.  Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.  He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.  1Peter 2:23,24
