Christ to Be...

Scripture Prophesy and Fulfillment in Jesus

The Christ is to Be:

Prophet    Servant    Messiah    Savior    High Priest    King    Preach    More    Genealogy      Christ's foretold Death    Christ's foretold Resurrection    Christ's foretold Return

A Prophet - The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers.  You must listen to him... The Lord said to me: "What they say is good.  I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.  If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account." Deuteronomy 18:15, 17-19

The crowds answered, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee."  Matthew 21:11

"What things?" He asked.  "About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people."

"Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet."  John 4:19

The Servant of God - "Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations.  He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the st4reets.  A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.  In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth.  In his law the islands will put their hope."  Isaiah 42:1-4

Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place.  Many followed him, and he healed all their sick, warning them not to tell who he was.  This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "Here is my servant..."  Matthew 12:15-20

Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.  The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.  Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth?  Have you come to destroy us?  I know who you are - the Holy One of God!"  "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly.  "Come out of him!" The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.  The people were all so amazed..." Mark 1:21-27

The Messiah - The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One.  Psalm 2:2

"Seventy 'sevens' are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophesy and to anoint the most holy.  Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler comes, there will be seven 'sevens' and sixty-two 'sevens'.  It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble." Daniel 9:24-25

Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them..."Who do you say I am?"  Peter answered, "The Christ of God."  Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.  And he said, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life."  Luke 9:18,20-22

"Therefore let all Israel be assured of this:  God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."  Acts 2:36

"For he vigorously refuted the Jews in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.  Acts 18:28

A Savior - "The redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their sins," declares the Lord.  Isaiah 59:20

The Lord has made proclamation to the ends of the earth:  "Say to the Daughter of Zion, 'See, your Savior comes!  See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him."  Isaiah 62:11

"Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord."  Luke 2:11

They said to the woman, "We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world."  John 4:42

"God exalted him to his won right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel."  Acts 5:31

And we have seen and testified that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.  1John 4:14

A High Priest - The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind:  "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek."  Psalm 110:4

Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors.  For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.  Isaiah 53:12

"Tell him this is what the Lord Almighty says: 'Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from this place and build the temple of the Lord.  It is he who will build the temple of the Lord, and he will be clothed majesty and sit and rule on his throne.  And he will be a priest on his throne.  And there will be harmony between the two."  Zechariah 6:12,13

Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."  And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.  Luke 23:34

"Who is he that condemns?  Christ Jesus, who died - more that that, who was raised to life - is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.  Romans 8:34

So Christ also did not take upon himself the glory of becoming a high priest.  But God said to him: "You are my Son; today I have become your Father." And he says in another place: "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek."  During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.  Although hew was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered, and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.  Hebrews 5:5-10

...but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood....He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself....  Hebrews 7:15-28

He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and claves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption....How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!  Hebrews 9:11-14

Hebrews 6:19,20 Hebrews 9:24 ; 1 John 2:1

A King - "I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill."  Psalm 2:6

The Lord swore an oath to David, a sure oath that he will not revoke: "One of your own descendants I will place on your throne..."  Psalm 132:11

"The days are coming," declares the Lord, "when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.  In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety.  This is the name by which he will be called:  The Lord Our Righteousness."  Jeremiah 23:5,6

Ezekiel 37:24,25

Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."  John 1:49

..."You are right in saying I am a king.  In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth....  John 18:33-37

Matthew 2:5,6;  Luke 1:32,33

To Preach the Good News - The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach the good news to the poor.  He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners....  Isaiah 61:1

"The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor."  Matthew 11:5  ;  Mark 1:14 ; Luke 18:1

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.  He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him...The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him.  Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:  "The Spirit of the Lord is on me,...and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."  Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down.  The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."  Luke 4:14-21
